Heartbreaker

Steve Yzerman

There’s nothing wrong with honoring a skilled enemy. If you don’t already know it, I make a hobby out of hating the Red Wings. On one hand, I’m happy to see Yzerman go, but as a hockey fan I have to acknowledge the game will miss him tremendously. Enjoy the retirement, Y.

Grapes On Hockey

Grapes with a video clip on how Americans just don’t get Hockey Night In Canada.  By and large, he’s right…but this is one American who certainly understands.

Hockey Skillz

A link from Steven.  I tend to agree with his observation that while this is cool, it is a high stick, and therefore not legal.

Free Agency There have been a few big splashes already! Check out the details here.  The NHL page is simple and updates the fastest. The ESPN page includes a few more details, like terms of the deal. The biggest splashers so far are the Minnesota Wild.  They traded for Pavel Demitra and have signed Mark [...]

Steven’s Hockey Corner

An interesting time for NHL fans is approaching. Free Agency begins this Saturday, July 1. Some stars will change teams, which helps build excitement for the upcoming season. Already a number of trades have occurred. Check into Steven’s Hockey Corner for irregular updates! The big one over the weekend was Roberto Luongo, Panthers G, going [...]

Steven’s Hockey Corner

There were no fewer than THREE Stanley Cup Finals FIRSTS this year: A Successful Penalty Shot. (What a great hunch by MacTavish to go with Pronger in that situation!) Shorthanded overtime winner. (Another great play by Pisani in a Conn Smyth-worthy performance) Empty net goal in game 7 ( I love how Williams skated it [...]

The Stanley Cup Champions

Congratulations to the Carolina Hurricanes, knocking off my Edmonton Oilers in a fantastic game seven. What can you do against a twenty-one year old madman like Cam Ward?? Every year I watch them bring that Cup out to center ice, and it looks more beautiful every time I see it. It’s a secular relic; sacred [...]

Buccigross is funny. This is from his weekly mailbag; Yo John, What’s Stevie Y gonna do? Clay Grand Rapids, Mich. Whatever Stevie Y wants to do. Stevie Y does not sleep. He waits. Stevie Y can win a game of Monopoly without owning any property. In fine print on the last page of the Guinness [...]

Steve’s Hockey Corner

I’ve been able to sit and watch the first two games of the finals. To take them in fully, to evaluate and appreciate. It’s been an exciting playoff year, with many tough games and series, some unexpected dominance, and sheer battles. Here are some random thoughts. Carolina’s got the BEST playoff beards in recent memory! [...]

Steve’s Hockey Corner

There is plenty of Playoff Hockey left. We have a game 7 tonight. Anaheim and Calgary. Of course, everyone is anticipating a renewed Battle of Alberta, but don’t count out the Ducks just yet. Selanne has had a fun resurgence this season, and is playing well against a rough Calgary team. In the East, the [...]

ESPN.com – NHL – Burnside: An early NHL review

ESPN.com – NHL – Burnside: An early NHL review Early thoughts on a young NHL season. I’ve only seen a few moments of two games, and even I have to admit that game flows better. Now if they can just figure out how to protect the goalies from gate-crashers…

Steve’s Hockey Corner

Ron Francis hangs up the skates. * 3 Lady Bing trophies. * 1 Selke trophy. * 2 Stanley Cups. *20 season of 20 or more goals. For years, he was the only respectable thing about the Whalers/Hurricanes franchise. This guy deserves the same reverence as Gretzky, Howe, and Messier, though for different reasons.

Steve’s Hockey Corner

Many retirements have popped up in the last few weeks. It is disappointing that so many great players missed their final year because of the lockout. Messier. Greatest leader in any team sport. Ever. Al MacInnes. What a pleasure to watch…his slap shot bust the glass behind a cowering puck-eater! Won The Cup with Calgary [...]

Steve’s Hockey Corner

Another of the uncertainties going into the new NHL season that heightens the anticipation. Andreychuk re-signs with Tampa. It is somehow rewarding to see players older than ME still in the NHL. Heatly, Hossa swap teams. A fascinating move, benefitting both teams. I feal for the guy, but one could look at this and question [...]

Travesty

ESPN.com – NHL – Photo 841685 WHAT IS THIS?! (click on ‘Prev’ and you’ll see more photos) Is this really hockey? Can they call it something else?

Steve’s Hockey Corner

ESPN.com – NHL – Buccigross: NHL marketers, lend me your ears Bucci loves the game. He’s got great ideas (except larger nets) and entertaining articles. I’d LOVE to see an NHL commercial during the SuperBowl. NHLers playing in the Olympics could be the focus. Transactions: Leafs lose Mogilny. He signs again with the Devils. Lightning [...]

Steve’s Hockey Corner

Link to story A difficult situation all around, certainly, but Bertuzzi has stepped up and taken responsibility. He’s tried to reach out to Moore, who, perhaps understandably, refuses to interact with Bertuzzi. Two thing stand out to me from this article; Second Chances are merely Words until -and unless- they come to fruition. Pittsburg has [...]

Steve’s Hockey Corner

Eric Lindros is about to sign with Toronto. That would be a mistake for them, I think; a financial risk, based on potential for a career-ending head injury. Anything he signs is guaranteed money. Toronto resigned defensemen Wade Belak and Aki Berg. Smart moves. Pittsburgh traded for Jocelyn Thibault, a marginally successful keeper with a [...]

The Bertuzzi Issue

NOTE – This was posted by Steven Mayo. I have decidedly mixed feelings on this. I suspect Bertuzzi did not intend to drive Moore’s face into the ice – he just didn’t expect to knock him unconscious with the first hit. When Moore went limp, Bertuzzi also lost his balance and fell on top of [...]
