Lincoln Chafee – A Profile In Cowardice
Chafee, now that he has safely lost his seat and can speak truthfully, doesn’t want to be a Republican anymore.
“I haven’t made any decisions. I just haven’t even thought about where my place is,” Chafee said at a news conference. When pressed on whether his comments indicated he might leave the GOP, he replied: “That’s fair.”
Thoughts of ‘rear ends’ and ‘doors’ immediately come to mind.
He went further in saying his loss was a good thing for the country.
Chafee said he has not decided what to do after leaving office, but he hoped to stay involved in public life. He said his loss may have helped the country by switching control of Congress.
“The people have spoken all across America. They want the Democrats and Republicans to work together,” he said. “I think the president now is going to have to talk to the Democrats. I think that’s going to be good for America.”
If you feel that way, why stick around in the first place? Why run for re-election as something you oppose? Anyone remember Phil Gramm? After serving in the Senate as a Democrat, Gramm has a change of heart, resigned his seat and ran again in the special election as a Republican, winning his seat back.
That’s courage.
Running again, losing, and then coming clean while saying “you were only in it to bring money to the state” is rather pathetic.
And the man had a 63% approval rating, and still lost. He could have easily done what Gramm did.
I’ve never been happier to see a Republican smacked down.
