Limbaugh’s Problem

Breaking News (What, slow news day?) Limbaugh Will Not Be Charged Over Viagra

Long time readers of this blog will recall that even as a Rush fan, I had serious issues with his ethical lapse in the prescription pain killer issue of a couple of years ago. However, this Viagra flap is simply pathetic. Rush is detained at his home airport, his shaving kit searched, the pills discovered, and almost immediately an anonymous call goes out from the local prosecution office to the Associated Press. This was more about trying to embarrass Limbaugh than any serious effort of law enforcement.

It seems that doctors writing prescriptions in such a way as to protect the identity of celebrities is not uncommon, and seems to be a sensible practice given what we just saw happen in this case. I’ve heard numerous law enforcement officers on TV state that the SOP in this situation is to call the doctor right then and there, not issue a press release.

Such is the price of celebrity – a man’s medical circumstance trumps common decency.
