Piano Lupo AAR

Posted here.  In this AAR, you’ll get to hear me use the word ‘subsequently’ every thirty seconds.  Geez.

Tough scenario all around.  Chris made the comment that this is the sort of attack that gets the officer fragged as he’s explaining what the soldiers are supposed to do.

  1. Hi Todd,

    Back again…Nice little AAR.

I think you made a mistake by not using the Mortars, keep hitting the Fortified building with rate, etc., if the scenario takes place in ’45 you could use WP to smoke the adjacent hexes or the building with a NMC required, and move some 1/2 squads adjacent and force the Italian to use FPF and hope to take some NMCs…pretty standard stuff really as I’m sure you know.

Were their no DCs in the American OOB? I would find that surprising…since you need to breach the building to enter, unless you could score a KIA and Rubble a building hex.

I liked your woods placement of the mortars and the squads moving through the center woods line. Next time don’t split your forces, just use ‘em as one big battering ram with the Mortars.

Just some simple ideas here to peak some interest…thanks again, enjoying your AARs, kinda like a refresher course on ASL.

    Regards, Paul

  2. Hi Paul, thanks for reading/watching/listening.

The scenario was in 1943, so the mortars had no smoke. When I first started planning, I was excited to see the mortars because of the smoke potential, but that quickly turned to disgust when I realized they couldn’t do it.

There were no DCs in the order of battle, only a ’43 bazooka, which I used quite a bit point blank, even accepting the backblast in the adjacent building toward the end out of desperation.

It is a difficult situation. With 7 morale Americans, any assault is difficult. Now I’m looking at an assault over open ground, with the only real cover being adjacent to the enemy. And that leaves me with routing problems for when I do break. The scenario is so short that any broken troops will route back to the woods, eventually rally, and then have to repeat the crossing of the open ground to get back into the fight.

I’m certainly open to my mistakes here, but I just can’t see how the Americans can consisitently (at least 50%?) win this scenario given the circumstances. It is like pushing cooked spaghetti.

Thanks for the comments! I enjoy the analysis.

    Todd

Actually can’t rubble the building with a 60mm Mortar, too small, needs to be >=70mm HE or HEAT…oooops sorry!

Not if you push spaghetti in your mouth…
