Light Posting Today

I have my hands full with a number of things today, so content will probably be light.

A few notes. The second animated AAR (Bring up the Boys) will be posted later this evening. I have the presentation finished and now I just have to record the narration. I’ve added a link to the upper right where you can subscribe to the AARs through an RSS reader if you are so inclined. Thanks for all of the positive feedback.

For those that are interested, the Ubuntu installation worked out just fine. I had some issues with my data drives, but they were not related to Linux. Somehow I ended up with a Master Boot Record on a data drive, so it was preventing the system from booting. When I hooked the drives to a Windows machine, they also brought it to a crashing halt. I probably could have figured out how to edit the MBR, but I couldn’t seem to get them to benignly attach to any existing OS. In the end, I went and picked up a USB drive enclosure for $30 and mounted them as external drives, swapping them around and recovering all of the data before reformatting them and moving the data back over. I wanted to turn one into an external drive anyway, so it worked out just fine.

Initial experiments with Ubuntu show promise. In ten minutes, it installed, found the internet, was able to read files from my Windows machine, and recognize my Seagate 5 GB USB. That was already farther than I ever got with Fedora. I browsed the extensive software library available for free and was impressed. I might stick with this one for awhile.

Now if I can find a cheap Mac to screw around with…
