TCS: Tech Central Station – Fill ‘er Up with Oils Sands!
It was a tenet of the late great economist Julian Simon that we’ll never run out of any commodity. That’s because before we do the increasing scarcity of that resource will drive up the price and force us to adopt alternatives. For example, as firewood [...]
Last Saturday, I finally had to go buy a new USB flash drive, as my three year old 64 MB wiped itself out. Since I can’t trust it to carry data, it was time to replace it.
The new Flash Drive (512 MB SanDisk) lasted six days before dying! It simply stopped [...]
Yet another rejection, this time from Zahir for the story, “The Second Front”. I expected this one. I’ve never been happy with the story anyway.
I’m arriving late to this party.
As someone else wrote once (and forgive me for forgetting where I got this), it is a darn good thing Bush is so good at killing Islamic fascists, because I’ve got very little else to support him for.
Really, the man makes it hard to support him anymore. He only [...]
I’m listening to Sean Hannity right now on the drive between Kalamazoo and Toledo for the weekend, and I’m a bit appalled. But then again, it is Sean Hannity, who is frequently appalling.
Scooter Libby has been indicted on five counts. I don’t have a net connection handy, but I thought I heard two [...]
THE FOLLOWING POST IS BY CHRIS GIDMAN – he was my guest at the Serenity blogger screening some time back.
Wasn’t there once a saying that science fiction was just western opera in space? Joss Whedon’s television series Firefly and its culminating movie Serenity has taken this literally. He introduced us to [...]
Yeah, I know.
Things haven’t been good. While we came out of the accident in pretty decent shape, it has seemed to be a month of struggle here. We’ve been really busy with various appointments for the kids, and we are in the middle of trying to rebuild the house. Between restoring the [...]
Military: New Aluminum Windows Stop .50-Caliber Bullet
I found this on Best of the Web today. Transparent aluminum?
A new type of transparent armor made of aluminum could one day replace glass in military vehicles.
The product is called aluminum oxynitride. It is being tested by the Army and the University of Dayton Research Institute in Ohio. [...]
Well, damn.
We woke up this morning intending to take Reagan to her hearing screen. (We think she may have some ear blockages that will require tubes…at least that is the best scenario). The four of us piled into the van and headed to the doctor.
Picture a typical drive through moderate traffic, [...]
ESPN.com – NHL – Burnside: An early NHL review
Early thoughts on a young NHL season.
I’ve only seen a few moments of two games, and even I have to admit that game flows better. Now if they can just figure out how to protect the goalies from gate-crashers…
Dan Simmons should have a granite temple erected around his person. It should move with him, marking his location so lesser mortals understand in whose presence they may find themselves. From Hyperion to Carrion Comfort to Ilium and now Olympos, Simmons writes engaging, fascinating and emotional works that dwarf most other things at [...]
Bill Kenyon is a friend of mine from my days in Atlanta, and a fellow writer. I thought it would be appropriate for me to offer a link to his new endeavor. It is early, so there isn’t much there. I’m sure that will change over time.
As I gather the enthusiasm to blog again, I thought I’d at least post my latest reading material. After Haldeman’s Forever Free, I swore I’d never read him again.
Guess I’m a sucker. Not much to say so far about this one. Still early.
Too tired to blog, too apathetic to care.
Maybe later.
