CNN.com – Eight more Iraqis killed on election eve – Jan 29, 2005 As is tradition, topical posts can be found on Lifelike Pundits, Trying To Grok, WizBang, and this outstanding post by Slowplay. I feel compelled to write something about the election, since it is obviously one of the biggest stories of the year. [...]

Titan’s Methane Not Produced by Life, Scientists Say A little Space Blogging this morning. One of the Big Questions regarding Titan has been regarding the source of the Methane. We’ve known for a long time that Titan is thick with the stuff, which raised some questions since Methane, on Earth, is destroyed by ultraviolet light. [...]

Related thoughts to this post can be found at Great Blue Whale, Expat Yank, and Imperial Requiem. The term ‘Neo-conservative’ carries nearly the same pejorative weight as does the term ‘liberal’, and they bear some commonalities of application; notably the terms are rarely self-referential. And while ‘neocon’ is a favorite epithet of the Left, I [...]

Stanford Center for Internet and Society If you aren’t already familiar with my position on copyrights, go here and here. Given those views, you might be surprised at my reaction to Kahle v. Ashcroft cited in the above link. What is Kahle about? From the first U.S. copyright statute in 1790 until the Copyright Act [...]

Suicide Bombers Die to Obtain Justice For Others First off, Eric the Unread has some contrasting views on the topic. I’ve been reading a lot of the Arab News for a perspective from Saudi Arabia, mostly dwelling on the situation in Iraq. I stumbled on this editorial tonight, and at first, it wasn’t really surprising. [...]

Hillary was down in the land of the Butterfly Ballot, rambling on about the lack of ‘vision’ from the US leadership. America’s leaders don’t have a vision, and the economy may be on the brink of collapse, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said Sunday. The chance to invest in a national energy policy may be lost [...]

CNN.com – Christians issue gay warning on SpongeBob video – Jan 20, 2005 We are being rightfully mocked on sites like this one, and this one. This is one of the reasons I consider myself more of a Conservative than a Republican. I understand that the evangelical right is a voting block with considerable power, [...]

The Social Security issue has always been a moral issue to me. The Fly Bottle has a link to a David Shapiro article on the morality of Social Security. It looks like I’ve been echoing Shapiro for some time without realizing it. The thread of comments below by Chris G. has raised some deeper issues [...]

Yahoo! News – Airbus Throws Glitzy Party for A380 Superjumbo While our European friends are patting themselves on the back for their new GigantoAirbus, I’m wondering if they’ve read the future of air travel properly. I love big planes just as much as the next guy and I can’t deny this thing is awesome. But [...]

Family news update – Reagan had her MRI today and tolerated the anesthetic well. She’s recovering here in the hospital as I type this. Initial results are good, so looks like she’s fine as for as the noggin is concerned. We have an actual Pediatric Neuro visit next month, so we’ll see.

There’s been a lot of talk recently about President Bush’s proposal for Social Security reform. And while a mind-numbing amount of numbers are being bandied about, both in support of the need for reform and in a silly reversal by the Left regarding the existence of the Crises, I think all of the debate is [...]

Project Orion: The True Story of the Atomic Spaceship Imagine, in an era where every pound of a spacecraft was being scrutinized in a concentrated effort to save weight, a design team including a several hundred pound barber chair to service a crew of a few hundred on an extended mission. I don’t think there are going to be any updates today. I’m ‘falling down on the floor’ tired, and can’t even think coherently. The plan is for me to return to work tomorrow and finish out the week, then take all of next week off to be home. My mother is here to help out [...]

The updates are going to slow down, obviously. I do have some pictures to post later though, so check back this afternoon. It was a decent night. Samantha is eating well, and sleeping sound. I’m surprised at how alert she is. She’s spending most of her time looking around. Diane is having a huge breakfast [...]
